Tank-to-Tank Fuel Transaction Explained
A tank-to-tank fuel transaction is a petroleum trading procedure where fuel is transferred from the seller’s verified storage tank directly into the buyer’s nominated or leased storage tank. This structure is commonly used for products such as EN590 10 PPM Diesel, Jet A-1, D6, gasoline, and other petroleum products.
How Tank-to-Tank Works
-
Buyer submits ICPO
The buyer provides an Irrevocable Corporate Purchase Order (ICPO) specifying the product, quantity, location, and required terms.
-
Seller verifies the buyer
The seller reviews the buyer's company information and purchasing capability.
-
Tank verification
The relevant tank storage information is verified between the authorized parties. Depending on the transaction, TSA, TSR, or other storage documentation may be required.
-
Commercial Invoice / Contract
Once the transaction is accepted, the seller issues the appropriate commercial documentation and transaction terms.
-
Product verification and SGS inspection
An independent inspection company such as SGS may conduct a dip test and verify the quantity and quality of the product in storage.
-
Buyer confirms the product
Following successful inspection and verification, the buyer confirms readiness to proceed under the agreed transaction procedure.
-
Payment
Payment is made according to the agreed contract terms, commonly by bank wire transfer or another mutually accepted instrument.
-
Transfer of title and product
Once contractual payment requirements are satisfied, ownership is transferred and the product is moved from the seller's tank to the buyer's nominated tank.
